After the weather we’ve been having for the past couple of weeks in Toronto, I’m ready to call it a day and move down south. I may still have a few weeks to go until I can spend some time in the sunshine, but I decided to start getting ready early & give you a little warm weather inspo. I recently made a visit to Dixie Outlet Mall to pick up some Spring Break Essentials – let’s check them out!

Of course, when it comes to spring break, spending some quality time on the beach is always key. I love a good pair of jean shorts ($12 – for real – at Boathouse) for wearing to the beach; they’re comfortable and look cute over a bathing suit! A pair of cute shades is always a must-have as well. I managed to score an amazing deal on these heart-shaped sunnies (on sale for $6 at Aldo) that give me major Riverdale vibes.

Of course, a cute bathing suit is basically the uniform of spring break, and I fell in love with this one from Ardene (I picked up the matching set for only $9). It has this retro feel to it that I adore, and has a really great fit. Who knew you could pick up an amazing bathing suit at such a great price?

To finish off my casual daytime wear, I found these fantastic Montego Bay sandals from Payless ($15) that can be worn on the beach or out for drinks later on! The gold and white straps add a really nice feel to these.

When it comes to spring break essentials, I also like to pack a fun nighttime look that’s perfect for dinner along the beach or dancing all night with a margarita in hand. This romantic romper from Winners ($25, compared at $40) was the perfect choice for this; I can’t wait to wear it for drinks at my favourite spot in Costa Rica next month! And of course, the perfect outfit deserves the perfect shoes, so I decided to splurge a little with this gorgeous pair from Call It Spring ($60). They’re really light and the wedge makes them super comfortable, which makes wearing them for a few hours that much more bearable.

What do you bring along when you go on a spring break vacay?

At this point in time, I can almost assure you that I’m either sitting on the beach, trying to surf, or taking a hike by a volcano (follow me on Instagram to see my Costa Rica adventures!). Well, seeing as I’m essentially living on the beach for 2 weeks, I thought I would share what I’m bringing along with me!

Beach Bag beauty essentials

So, what’s in my beach bag (or in this case, fanny pack)?

  • Blinc Mascara + Eyeliner – Between hanging out in the water and sweating in the sun, there’s no room for mascara & eyeliner that’s going to bleed or melt, leaving you like a raccoon caught in the heat. These goodies from Blinc don’t go anywhere once they’ve been applied, which means you can go from the beach to drinks at the cantina in the blink of an eye. Oh, and they come off just as easily as they go on, despite their staying power.
  • Eau Thermale Avene High Protection Emulsion – Sunburns? Ain’t nobody got time for that. Keep the delicate skin on your face safe with this 50+ SPF lotion. It’s water resistant, so you can feel protected if going in the water, and is small enough to carry around with you for easy reapplication throughout the day.
  • Dermalibour+ Repairing Cream – Ok, yes, accidents happen and it’s better to be prepared & be able to deal with them so they don’t get in the way of your fun. This cream soothes, repairs and purifies skin issues (I accidentally burned my arm on my curling iron last week, and this worked so quickly), meaning it’s perfect to help deal with any pesky cuts, bug bites or – gasp! – sunburns.
  • Darphin Hydraskin Light – After spending time in the sun, it’s always a good idea to stay moisturized. This cream gel helps to keep my skin feeling hydrated, and is lightweight enough that it doesn’t leave me shiny, which is exactly what I don’t want when I’m on vacation.
  • The Body Shop Honey Bronze Drops of Sun – Give your foundation or moisturizer a nice hint of warmth with this “holiday glow creator.” Simply add a drop to your foundation, mix it in, and apply as you usually would. You can add more drops to deepen the intensity if needed!
  • Shiseido Ibuko Quick Fix Mist – After spending time in the sun, your skin can feel tired and in need of a refresh. The gel-like formula turns to mist when you spritz it on your face, targeting dehydration and suppressing shine for an instantly fresh feel.
  • Matrix Biolage Anti-Static Spray – My hair has a tendency to go a little crazy in the heat, and I’m counting on this anti-static spray to keep it in line. A couple of spritzes on damp hair helps to keep static from interfering with your plans.
  • Sephora Shine Beautifully Watercolor Metallic Temporary Tattoos – because beach time calls for a little fun. These vivid, bright temporary tattoos add cute body art that washes off when you’re finished with it. I love how colourful they are!

SUMMER IS HERE! Yep, as of Sunday summer has officially arrived. I’m going to help you get ready to beat the heat and survive the season with some of my top warm weather beauty picks.

Look Hot

  • The Refresh Botanicals BB Cream ($24) is perfect for giving your skin a bit of a boost when the heat hits. This lightweight BB cream helps to even out skintone, leaving it more radiant and smooth, while hydrating (thanks to safflower, almost and jojoba oils) and protecting against the signs of aging. It’s ideal for days at the beach when you want a bit of coverage and hydration without layering on the foundation.
  • Shine bright with Sally Hansen Miracle Gel ($12 ea/$20 for duo pack). 2 new collections and 5 limited edition shades coming in July mean tons of colour options (the Boho Chic collection is hella bright and perfect for pedis!) while a new Top Coat Activator locks in colour and provides serious shine and volume, giving you the effect of a gel manicure at home – without using a UV/LED light!

Tame Your Mane

  • Banish fly-aways and frizz with Redken Fly-Away Fix Finishing Sheets ($25). These sheets, which resemble those used in the dryer to get rid of static, are easily stashed in your purse for easy access throughout the day. Swipe one throughout your hair and over fly-aways to tone them down for a sleek finish.
  • Make styling your hair after a day in the water a snap with Cake Beauty Satin Sugar Texturizing Beach Spray ($24, available July at Murale). This non-drying spray helps to build body and create soft beachy waves using sugar and a tiny bit of salt. Spray it in, scrunch your locks and let them air dry for a perfectly tousled look.
  • Give your hair a deep clean with Biolage Cleansing Conditioner ($34 for 1L). Available in 4 different formulas for fine, medium, coarse & curly hair, these conditioners get rid of the need for shampoo so you can give your hair a rest, while nourishing, strengthening and preventing frizz. Get rid of product, chlorine and sweat buildup so your hair stays cleaner and fresher longer.
  • Minimize blow dry time with a spritz of Matrix Style Link Turbo Dryer Blow Dry Spray ($18). This quick drying spray helps to speed up your blow dry while helping to tame frizz and fly-aways for smoother, sleeker style.

Cool Down

  • The Sephora Collection Glitter and Chill Cooling Mask ($15) is the perfect way to relax after a day in the sun or the morning after. Keep it in the fridge and throw it on to depuff, cool down tired eyes & relax.
  • Wake up tired skin with the Sephora Collection Moisturizing and Energizing Jelly Mask ($24 for 6 masks). These individually packaged masks help to refresh and illuminate tired skin for an instantly energized look. Pop them in the fridge for half an hour before using for an instantly refreshing and cooling feel.

Keep Going

  • Getting used to your favourite or new sandals & wedges again can be a pain. Polysporin Blister Treatment ($8). These discreet, water resistant pads help to immediately relieve blister pain while they give a cushion that protects from rubbing so that blisters can heal quickly and you can keep rocking those sky high wedges.

What are your favourite beauty products to help you survive the summer?

I know I’m not alone in the dreaded fight against unwanted hair. Whether it be a little stubble on the leg, a bit of fuzz on the upper lip or that pain of a bikini line, we’ve all had a battle with hair that just won’t go away and loves to come back at the most inappropriate of times. Personally, I really dread dealing with it while on vacation – I’m not big on bringing razors and shaving cream with me and having to keep up with hair removal when I should be relaxing and enjoying a cocktail (or two). I’m heading to Vegas in a couple of weeks for a bachelorette party and really haven’t been looking forward to having to worry about being hair-free the entire time I’ll be down there, especially since I’ll probably be living in bathing suits, shorts and dresses for the duration of the trip. Bring on smooth, stubble-free legs and I will be one happy girl.

That being said, I was really excited when I had the chance to try a few new products from the Veet Natural Inspirations line – the Facial Cream Kit, Wax Strips and Sugar Wax. I know waxing gives better and longer lasting results than shaving can, but being a waxing virgin I was a little nervous about giving them a try. Since all three were formulated with a sensitive formula, I decided to dive right in. I also noticed they contain ingredients like natural argan oil, aloe, shea butter and avocado oil, which would help to moisturize the skin afterwards so I wouldn’t have to worry about it drying out.

Of the three products I have to say my favourite was the wax strips. They were so easy to use (perfect for beginners) and left no mess behind. All I had to do was rub my hands together on the strip to warm it up a little, peel apart the two sides, and apply firmly before yanking it off. I went right for it using the band aid mentality and it paid off. I experienced very little pain and the hair yanked right out, leaving behind smooth skin. The perfect finish wipes (included) were also a welcome find since they helped to easily remove any leftover wax and stickiness (baby oil also works well once these are all gone). My legs felt great, with lots of smoothness and no stubble left behind.

I also really enjoyed using the facial cream kit. If you’ve seen any of my posts that include lipstick you’ve probably noticed my lip swatches. When I take these, I have to get up close and personal with my lips and I can see every single little tiny hair that I may not notice looking in a mirror. Let me tell you, this drives me absolutely crazy. I found this to be a great solution to that problem. All I had to do was apply the hair removal cream with the included spatula and let it sit for 5-10 minutes (I’m going to stress that it is important to check at 5 minutes to see how this is performing and continue checking – don’t leave it on longer than you need to or you may notice some irritation) before clearing it and the hair off. I also made sure to finish off with the gentle finishing cream to help calm the skin. I will mention that I did notice a bit of redness afterwards but it calmed down very quickly. Make sure you test out the hair removal cream on a patch of skin before applying it to your face to make sure you won’t have any problems! One other thing I want to mention – in my teens I was all over finding the best hair removal methods and depilatories were a big part of this phase. I loved how they worked but hated the smell of them. I’m very happy to point out that this hair removal cream didn’t have the same smell that I remembered from my younger days and was actually quite pleasant… Something that is very important when the cream is going to be applied under the nose!

I also gave the sugar wax a try. It was beyond easy to set up; all I had to do was zap it in the microwave for 40 seconds to melt it thoroughly. It was quite easy to use although maybe a bit messier for a first timer than the wax strips were. I love the fact that the included fabric strips can be used several times and that the wax can be easily applied anywhere. And yes, it does get rid of the hair! One of my favourite things about this kit has got to be the ingenious application spatula, which has an indicator that tells you whether the wax is too hot or at an appropriate temperature for use. There would definitely be nothing worse than applying steaming hot wax. I mean, sure, you’re going to end up hair-free but you’ll also pay for it with some redness or a burn.

Overall, I’m really happy that I gave the Veet Natural Inspirations line a try. The products were really easy to use and definitely gave great results. As a waxing newbie I was also really happy to see that yes, even I could pull it off at home – with minimal pain (my biggest worry). I’m looking forward to continuing to use these and to having smooth, hair-free legs for my trip. Bring it on Vegas, my legs and I are ready for you!

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration

The first long weekend and unofficial kickoff to summer has just passed, and luckily the weather (for the most part) decided to cooperate.  I went camping for the weekend with my boyfriend and a few friends, and we spent tons of time sitting out in the sun and enjoying how beautiful it was outside.  As we all know, the sun can be fun, but it’s also got a mean streak and it’s important to protect our skin from its damaging UV rays.

I had my Hawaiian Topic Silk Hydration Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 ($10.99) on hand to keep my skin safe and the burns far away.  It’s perfect for every day use – it has hydrating ribbons to keep your skin moisturized and looking great and has a yummy sweet smell with a hint of coconut – I can promise you will find this in my beach bag all summer.  It’s non-greasy and absorbs really quickly so you don’t have to worry about feeling shiny all day.  I also brought along my Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration After Sun Moisturizer ($9.99) which is perfect after a day in the sun.  It has lotion ribbons and soothing aloe mixed in so it will help cool your skin down and add in extra moisture (especially perfect if you – naughty naughty – happened to burn a little). And yes, you guessed it – this one smells amazing too with hints of papaya and coconut.

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Sunscreen Lotion & After Sun Moisturizer

My friends at Hawaiian Tropic and I want to make sure you’re ready for the sun too.  They’re going to give 25 of you your own Sunscreen Lotion and After Sun Moisturizer to try out!  The best part?  If you’re one of the 25 chosen and come back here to post your review, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card!  Sound good?  Make sure you enter using the Rafflecopter form below.  This contest is open to Canadians only.  Good luck!
