Good morning! I’ve decided that I’m going to start doing a Product of the Week feature (POTW). Each week, I’m going to briefly highlight a product that I’ve been absolutely loving – I have so many products that I’m constantly trying, and I thought it would be a great way to share the gems that really catch my attention. Check back every week to see what my current fave is and share yours in the comments!

So, what’s up this week? I’ve been loving philosophy take a deep breath night, an oil-free detoxifying gel-balm. I’ve really been riding the philosophy train lately (renewed hope in a jar, time in a bottle and their purity cleanser are among the most currently used in my skincare routine) and I was really excited when this showed up in my mailbox.

Why am I loving it? First of all, it has a really interesting texture; it almost reminds me of a foamy jello, and it’s so lightweight on my skin. In the warmer months, my skin does tend to get a bit shinier, so light, oil-free moisturizers are what I tend to turn to to keep this at bay. The product feels great on my skin, and though it is intended for nighttime use, it can definitely be used during the day as well.

When I came back from my trip, my skin went absolutely nuts, and I really think that this helped to calm it back down thanks to its detoxifying nature. It contains an antioxidant/antipollution complex to help banish all the bad stuff, so it’s perfect for bringing your skin back to its healthy state.

Shiny skin? I’m definitely not a fan, and the humidity we’ve had as of late has definitely not been working out in my favour. Follow these steps to help you skip the shine!

Switch up your routine

29s_shiny-skin-1

Skin needs change in the summer as we move away from dry weather and spend more time dealing with humidity and heat. Try switching to an oil-free, lightweight cleanser like Garnier’s SkinActive Clean+ Shine Control Cleansing Gel ($11, available at drugstores), that helps to control shine, and opt for a gel moisturizer that will keep your skin hydrated without weighing it down, like Philosophy’s Take a Deep Breath Oil-Free Oxygenating Cream ($49).

Add some balance

Try using a natural toner to help balance your skin and prevent overproduction of oil. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with one part water and apply to your skin with a cotton pad after cleansing for a quick DIY treatment.

Prep for the day

Give your skin the perfect base at the beginning of the day by starting off with a mattifying primer or gel to stop shine where it starts and keep it at bay. We love Benefit’s The POREfessional Matte Rescue Invisible Finish Mattifying Gel ($36). When it comes to coverage, stick to oil-free foundation or BB cream, like CoverGirl’s Clean Matte BB Cream ($8, available at drugstores) to even out your skin tone and prevent the shine from peeking through.

Freshen up

shiseido ibuki quick fix mist

Keep your skin feeling hydrated and refresh with a setting mist, like Shiseido’s Ibuki Quick Fix Mist ($32). When you feel shine start to creep up or your skin is feeling a little worn, give your face a quick spritz to rehydrate, cancel out shine and re-set your makeup.

Nix the grease

sephora cooling mint blotting papers

Feeling a little shiny throughout the day? Keep an emergency product or two in your purse for quick touch ups whenever you need them. Sephora’s Cooling Mint Blotting Papers ($10) are perfect for soaking up any grease that happens to pop up, and fit nicely into a bag or clutch. Lightly blot a sheet on your face where you need a little help.

Philosophy Oxygen Gel Cream

Sometimes, you’ve just gotta breathe. Philosophy has definitely been keeping this in mind with The Microdelivery Detoxifying Oxygen Peel ($89 CAD) and Take A Deep Breath Oil-Free Oxygenating Gel Cream ($49 CAD), which work hand-in-hand to restore and refresh the skin.

Starting off, The Microdelivery Detoxifying Oxygen Peel is an amazing two step process that helps to decongest the pores and renew the skin, for a brighter, healthier feel. You start off by applying a layer of the Detoxifying Charcoal Gel (to draw out imperfections) to the face, then follow up by applying a layer of the Oxygen Foam Booster (gives the effects of an oxygen facial) over top. Once this has been applied, the product will start to foam on your face, which is a crazy feeling, as you can guess by the picture below. After leaving it on for a few minutes, you “scrape” off the foam using the included exfoliating derma blade, then rinse of any remaining product. Afterwards, the skin is left feeling smooth and hydrated, with added radiance.

Then, the philosophy Take A Deep Breath Oil-Free Oxygenating Gel Cream uses clean-air technology to refresh the skin and help it recover from daily stressors. It also helps to improve radiance, so the skin looks brighter and healthier. I find that this cream is perfect for the summer time – it’s very light and almost mattifying, which is great for the warmer weather.

Have you tried any of these?

With Mother’s Day being only a few days away (May 11th, don’t forget!), I thought I would pull together a few of my top picks to help you find a gift your mom will love.  Granted, she’ll probably be just as happy with a big hug and you telling her how much you love her, but a little something special never hurts 😉

l'occitane, l'occitane neroli & orchidee, l'occitane collection de grasse, l'occitane fragrance, l'occitane fragrance beautifying cream, sally hansen gel, sally hansen gel pastel, sally hansen mother's day

L’Occitane Neroli & Orchidee Eau de Toilette ($75, 75 ml) & Fragrance Beautifying Cream ($36) – By combining two lovely ingredients (Neroli essence from the Mediterranean Shores & White Orchid from Madagascar), L’Occitane’s perfumer Karine Dubreuil created a scent that is feminine and delicate to join the La Collection de Grasse family.  An exciting addition is the Fragrance Beautifying Cream, which is lightly scented and designed to bring out the most in the fragrance while giving it longer staying power – and it works with any of the Collection de Grasse fragrances.

Sally Hansen Mother’s Day Salon Gel Polish Collection in Laven-Darling, For Teal, Just Peachy & Glamor-Fied ($14.95 each; gel starter kit sold separately) – These easy to use, at-home gel polishes are perfect for the mom who doesn’t have enough time to pamper herself regularly.  They promise chip-free colour and shine that lasts up to two weeks!

bite me, bite me too, cookbook, best cookbook, moroccan oil cleansing bar, moroccanoil soap

Bite Me & Bite Me Too by Julie Albert & Lisa Gnat ($29.95) – I love cooking.  If you’re looking for an amazing cookbook to get a mom who enjoys getting crafty in the kitchen, make it one of these.  Julie & Lisa have served up some kick-ass recipes with a side of sass, and I’ve enjoyed working my way through these books.  Seriously, they have yet to steer me wrong and I’m always left soaking up the compliments when I make something from these books.  Do yourself a favour and toss another copy in your cart for you to enjoy later.

Moroccanoil Cleansing Bar ($10) – Let your mom indulge in a little me-time when she bathes with this deeply moisturising bar, enriched with argan oil and shea butter to leave skin feeling clean and hydrated.  And no, the signature Moroccanoil scent certainly doesn’t hurt…

you solace, you makeup kit, you makeup, the body shop body souffle, the body shop satsuma

You Makeup Kit in Solace ($79.99) – This set is the perfect way to help inject a little more glamour into you mom’s life.  Each kit (there are 3 available) contains everything she needs to create a gorgeous look for a night out.  Inside you’ll find liquid liner, 2 shades of eye shadow, blush glow powder, lipstick, false eye lashes, lash adhesive, lip and eye primer & 3 brushes (blush brush, crease brush & eye shadow brush) which all come together for a beautiful look that can be easily recreated using the included instructions.  These can also be found on YouTube for the more visual learners!

The Body Shop Body Sorbet ($15) – I already go crazy for The Body Shop’s Body Butters and am really enjoying these new moisturizers!  They have more of a gel-like feel for hydration that feels light and cool to the touch.  Of course, they smell delicious – available in satsuma, morninga, grapefruit, mango & strawberry.

eos lip balm, eos lips, egg lip balm, , philosophy vanilla coconut, philosophy vanilla coconut set, philosophy coconut

eos Lip Balm Set ($5.99) – I will gladly attest that good things come in pretty packages, which is exactly why this eos Smooth Sphere lip balm set made its way onto this list.  If you’ve ever tried them, you know these lip balms are, for lack of a better word, the bomb.  They’re adorable and I’ve always got at least one packed into my purse.  And since it’s what’s on the inside that counts, these smell great and feel great (smooth lips for days!) and… Yes, they taste great too.

Philosophy Vanilla Coconut Set ($31) – You may not be able to whisk mom away to an exotic locale, but you can definitely help her feel like she’s in the tropics with this vanilla coconut scented set.  It contains lip gloss, body lotion and shampoo/shower gel/bubble bath so she’ll be surrounded by the intoxicating scent.
