Using a striping brush, outline a semi-circle shape on the pinky nail using the color Sally Hansen Miracle
Gel in Totem-ly Yours. The shape should resemble the shape of a coffee bean – oblong and round.

Keeping your nails looking fresh is an important part of many of our beauty rituals, but for some that’s easier said than done. Spa appointments are nice once in a while, but it’s also much more cost effective to do your nails at home. Tom Bachik, L’Oreal Paris’ Celebrity Nail Artist and the MANicurist for stars like Heidi Klum and Jennifer Lopez, knows a thing or two about nails and let us in on some of his no-fail secrets. Follow his steps to avoid common nail mistakes and master your mani at home.

Skip the soak

We may be used to giving our nails a good soak before a mani, but this actually changes the shape of the nails and how polish adheres to them. Instead, try giving them a quick wipe with rubbing alcohol to prep the nail bed.

Care for those cuticles

Gently push them back with a cuticle stick, but try to avoid trimming them back since this can actually cause them to grow back thicker as they try to protect the nail base. Afterwards, just buff around the cuticle area for a smooth finish.

Find your shape

File the tips of your nails to your favourite length and shape, using a smooth file with a high grit (a file that is too coarse can result in peeling nails). Having trouble making your tips even? Try holding your hand fanned out, with your finger tips facing away from you, while you file.

Build a base

Before applying your polish, start with a layer of base coat. It acts like double-sided tape for the nail, giving the nail polish more to adhere to for longer wear. Don’t just use any base coat though, make sure you find the right one for your nail type, whether it’s to fill ridges or add strength.

Add your colour

The fun part! Apply polish to the nail (we love the new L’Oreal Paris Le Vernis A L’Huile since it contains a blend of four precious oils for amazing colour and shine), applying a little pressure with the applicator so the tip of the brush fans out to match the rounded shape of the cuticle. Use thin, even coats of polish, allowing it to dry for one to tow minutes before applying a second coat, and then a layer of top coat.

Clean it up

Dip a thin brush (a lip brush or fine paintbrush are perfect for this) into nail polish remover and use it to remove any excess polish around the nail or on the cuticles.

Hydrate!

There’s nothing worse than dry, ragged cuticles. Massage cuticle oil into them to hydrate, soften and smooth. Tom actually uses facial oil for this, and swears by L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Glow Renewal Facial Oil, as the blend of eight essential oils adds the perfect dose of hydration. Make this a part of your daily ritual, whether it’s first thing in the morning or right before you go to bed if you don’t want to walk around with oil on your hands.

As a beauty junkie, I’m constantly checking out new products. Once in a while, something comes along that gets me so excited that I can’t wait to share it. If you follow me on Snapchat (not a bad idea, if you want to keep up on the exciting new launch and events like the one I’m attending this weekend – follow me at deetommy), you might have seen that I was recently able to check out the new Essie Gel Couture nail polishes, which promise long lasting, gel-like results at home without the use of a UV or LED light. I’ve tried many of these at-home gel polishes, but I have to say this is one that truly lives up to its expectations – it really blew me away!

The 2 step system (2 coats of colour + the specially designed top coat) promise up to 14(!) days of wear, which is really incredible. I’ve seen the results on other people, and I’m personally on day 9 of my first application. The colour still looks amazing and I haven’t had any chips as of yet, which is a big deal for me. I’m the gal who’s polish likes to chip by the end of day 1. The shine has dulled a little (and by that, I mean very little) but that can be easily fixed by applying another layer of top coat. I have noticed a bit of wear along the tips of the nails, as I would expect, but it’s definitely not noticeable. My biggest issue? My nails are growing out quickly and the gap at the base is getting wider and wider, meaning I might be taking this off soon – but hey, I can’t blame Essie for that. I suggest applying as closely to the cuticle as possible to maximize wear time. Oh and for those of you wondering, I’ve been rocking the Essie Gel Couture polish in Dress Call.

Now, as this is a new line for Essie, we also see the introduction of a chic new bottle. Inspired by the swirl of a couture gown, the new collection features a bottle with a twirl shape, which will happily be on display on my polish shelves. And if the design isn’t enough for you, the collection itself will do you in. With 42 brand new shades, this brings about a large expansion to the Essie family. A wide range of shades that starts with graceful pastels, leading into bright statement makers and finishes with smoldering deep hues, I’m willing to bet there will be more than a few you’ll want to take home. The formula is fantastic as well – the polishes apply smoothly with no streaks (I was impressed with the potency of them after just one coat), and two coats will give full colour. Finish off with the top coat to seal the deal and lock in colour with high shine.

To further expand on the new design, Essie has also introduces its new patent-pending swirl stem brush for perfect application. The swirled stem picks up just enough polish for the bottle and hangs on to it to avoid drips, while the wider, tapered brush makes application a snap.

All in all, I’m pretty impressed with the Essie Gel Couture collection so far. The formula is amazing, and combined with the top coat, the results truly do last. Will you be giving these a try? What shades do you hope to see?

The Essie Gel Couture collection is available June 14, 2016 for $13.99 CAD/bottle.

Beauty is definitely in bloom right now, if the new L’Oreal Paris Collection Exclusive La Vie En Rose by Colour Riche is any indication. The latest celeb-inspired collection takes on a daintier style, with 6 beautiful rose-hued matte lipsticks and polishes. L’Oreal Paris’ Beauty Ambassadors, Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Julianne Moore, Doutzen Kroes, Liya Kibede and Eva Longoria, each lend their name and style to a polish/lipstick duo, creating an array of shades for every skin tone.

Each of the six lipsticks was created with a combination of mother-of-pearl micro fragments and velvety pigments to create a formula that is long-lasting with lovely colour. They’re not overly pigmented, leaving a nice wash of colour that is pretty without being overpowering. They glide on really nicely, with a soft, satin finish that keeps the lips moisturized.

Of course, as with the previous collections, the lipsticks find partners in matching shades of nail polish. Again, each polish has been inspired by the ambassadors, and take on delightfully pink tones that match up in richness. Full of pigment and rich in shine, they glide beautifully on the nails. The lighter shades do need 2-3 coats, as they apply quite sheer and a little streaky of course, but the second coat quickly takes care of this.
