Lately, I’ve been giving a lot more thought to the products that I use and what goes into them. What we use on our bodies goes in our bodies, so to speak, and more and more companies are making it easier to make choices that we can feel confident about when it comes to purchasing these. When I heard of the new Matrix Biolage R.A.W. (click through for more info) line, a collection of hair products designed to be “Real, Authentic and Wholesome” I knew I had to give it a try.

The collection of shampoos, conditioners and clay masks was created with the intention of developing a lineup of products with an origin that is as natural as possible. They contain amazing natural ingredients, like coconut oil, kaolin clay, quinoa husk and black sesame, to provide hair with a wholesome treatment that doesn’t take away from performance. The products all have up to 95% natural origin, and are free of silicones, sulfates (a big one for me, as someone who colours their hair) and parabens. And, to make things even better, all of the packaging is 100% recyclable  and made from consumer recycled materials.

I’ve tried out all three pairs of the Matrix Biolage R.A.W. shampoo and conditioner, and I’ve had a really positive experience with all three; I can honestly say that they don’t compromise on performance, and leave the hair feeling great. I’m really enamored with the Uplift Shampoo and Conditioner. I have fine hair that tends to fall flat, especially after the second and third day, but but with the use of this I’ve actually noticed that my hair has a bit more lift and maintains its body after a few days, which is key for me. Black sesame and grapefruit help to purify, while kiwi and kaolin clay condition without weighing the hair down at the root. I’m also a fan of using the Nourish and Recover pairs for the few washes before I colour my hair – they help to restore moisture and softness that makes colouring easier and more effective, while minimizing damage.

They also all have amazing natural (and eco-friendly!) scents – it really says something about the product when you can smell the ingredients.

Overall, are these RAW products a success? I’m very happy to report that the Matrix Biolage R.A.W. collection lives up to their intentions. The ingredients that were sourced help to provide amazing benefits for the hair, while maintaining a wholesome balance. I’m a big fan of these and will definitely continue using them to keep my hair healthy.

I may have settled for red for now, but I’ve definitely played around with colour in the past – I’ve been brunette, I’ve been super blonde, I’ve had highlights, lowlights, bleached chunks and pink hair. I guess you could say I get bored with colour pretty often, and even though I’ve been red for a while, I’ve still frequently changed up the tone of red.

Matrix has put out a fantastic app for those of you who are looking to play around with your colour but want to see what it looks like first. The Matrix Color Lounge app (available for iTunes here and Android here) lets you upload your photo and try different shades (they’re all labeled so you can bring your look into a Matrix salon) and colouring techniques. You can go with all-over colour to start (or not) then add in a technique of your choice; you can choose from highlights (full, partial or accent), color blocking, ombré and painting). The best part? They have a wide range of colours to choose from.

I’ve been playing around with it and I’m loving seeing myself with different shades on – I’m getting inspired! I’m not ready to change my colour up yet, but I’m getting some great ideas for when I do. My personal favourite? It’s definitely purple right now! What do you think?

SUMMER IS HERE! Yep, as of Sunday summer has officially arrived. I’m going to help you get ready to beat the heat and survive the season with some of my top warm weather beauty picks.

Look Hot

  • The Refresh Botanicals BB Cream ($24) is perfect for giving your skin a bit of a boost when the heat hits. This lightweight BB cream helps to even out skintone, leaving it more radiant and smooth, while hydrating (thanks to safflower, almost and jojoba oils) and protecting against the signs of aging. It’s ideal for days at the beach when you want a bit of coverage and hydration without layering on the foundation.
  • Shine bright with Sally Hansen Miracle Gel ($12 ea/$20 for duo pack). 2 new collections and 5 limited edition shades coming in July mean tons of colour options (the Boho Chic collection is hella bright and perfect for pedis!) while a new Top Coat Activator locks in colour and provides serious shine and volume, giving you the effect of a gel manicure at home – without using a UV/LED light!

Tame Your Mane

  • Banish fly-aways and frizz with Redken Fly-Away Fix Finishing Sheets ($25). These sheets, which resemble those used in the dryer to get rid of static, are easily stashed in your purse for easy access throughout the day. Swipe one throughout your hair and over fly-aways to tone them down for a sleek finish.
  • Make styling your hair after a day in the water a snap with Cake Beauty Satin Sugar Texturizing Beach Spray ($24, available July at Murale). This non-drying spray helps to build body and create soft beachy waves using sugar and a tiny bit of salt. Spray it in, scrunch your locks and let them air dry for a perfectly tousled look.
  • Give your hair a deep clean with Biolage Cleansing Conditioner ($34 for 1L). Available in 4 different formulas for fine, medium, coarse & curly hair, these conditioners get rid of the need for shampoo so you can give your hair a rest, while nourishing, strengthening and preventing frizz. Get rid of product, chlorine and sweat buildup so your hair stays cleaner and fresher longer.
  • Minimize blow dry time with a spritz of Matrix Style Link Turbo Dryer Blow Dry Spray ($18). This quick drying spray helps to speed up your blow dry while helping to tame frizz and fly-aways for smoother, sleeker style.

Cool Down

  • The Sephora Collection Glitter and Chill Cooling Mask ($15) is the perfect way to relax after a day in the sun or the morning after. Keep it in the fridge and throw it on to depuff, cool down tired eyes & relax.
  • Wake up tired skin with the Sephora Collection Moisturizing and Energizing Jelly Mask ($24 for 6 masks). These individually packaged masks help to refresh and illuminate tired skin for an instantly energized look. Pop them in the fridge for half an hour before using for an instantly refreshing and cooling feel.

Happy Saturday!  You may remember seeing a few months back that myself and 3 other bloggers have taken on roles as ambassadors for Matrix Biolage’s newly revamped lines.  Each line is designed to target the needs of different hair types, locking in on the areas that provide problems.  With my faux-red, I have a lot of problems with colour fading and losing its vibrancy, so the Matrix Biolage ColorLast line is right up my alley.  Those of you who are rocking a different shade than your natural one can feel my pain.

Pretty in pink with ColorLast!

The ColorLast line, made up of a shampoo, conditione, mask and shine shake, has definitely made a difference in the life of my colour.  I’ve noticed tha radiance of it lasts longer and I experience minimal fading.  Red hair can be a huge pain – I love how it looks but the amount of time it lasts is a killer – and since I started using this line I’ve really seen the colour’s life being extended.

We all have our hair issues and needs.  Whether it be damage, colour, volume or curls that need to be taken care of, we all need a little TLC for our locks once in a while and no one knows that better than Matrix.  Their Biolage collection has been a big hit for years, with different lines focusing on several hair needs, and this year they decided to take it to the next level by reinventing the brand.

The four lines (ColorLast for colour treated hair, HydraSource for dry hair, SmoothProof for frizzy hair & VolumeBloom for fine hair) have taken on a whole new look with new ingredients to make them even better than ever.  The smell is the same and they still provide great results for the hair, but they now do so in a way that taps into the amazing powers of various natural ingredients like cotton, aloe, camelia and orchid, while using greener, more convenient bottles to enrich your experience.

Now for the exciting part – Matrix has asked me to become one of their Biolage ambassadors and the “face” of the ColorLast line.  I’m sure you’ve noticed that I like to rock a bold shade of red (now even better thanks to the new Matrix High Intensity Reds, but more on that to come in a later post), and as a faux-redhead I know all to well how hard it can be to make sure that your colour lasts.  Since I’ve started using the complete Biolage ColorLast line (consisting of a shampoo, conditioner, mask & shine shake) I’m extremely happy to report that my colour is lasting longer than ever.  My colour is usually very prone to fading, but since dying it about 4 weeks ago I’ve noticed very little fading all the way throughout.  My ends have a tendency to fade especially quickly, but they’re still rocking the same bold shade as my roots.  My verdict?  This stuff works and does an amazing job of helping to prolong the life of colour.

A little while back, myself and the other 3 Biolage Ambassadors Elaine (SmoothProof), Nicole (HydraSource) & Iva (VolumeBloom) were invited to the Four Seasons in Yorkville and the L’Oreal Academy to learn more about the line and to enjoy a day inspired by the new Biolage!

Post-massage and feeling pure bliss!

Our first experience was inspired by cotton and the VolumeBloom range – we got cozied up in fluffy cotton robes before being treated to a relaxing massage.  Cotton, with its ability to expand, is perfect for fluffing up fine hair!

Up next was a treatment inspired by “my” line, ColorLast.  Playing off the orchid and its colour-enhancing properties, we received luxurious (and colourful) manis – I even happened to choose a shade that wasn’t too far off from orchid!

Getting ready for lunch with an aloe-infused mocktail

After that, we enjoyed lunch with refreshing HydraSource-inspired mocktails created with Aloe, nature’s perfect moisturizer.  This amazing ingredient helps the hair to retain hydration, so it keeps up to 15x more than usual.

Creating our personalized scents with Aromachology

Our next experience was a fun one.  Inspired by the enduring camelia flower and the SmoothProof line, we were able to create our own signature fragrances with Aromachology.  This line is great for anyone who deals with frizz.  The camelia flower helps to block humidity for great control and smoothness!

Finally, we were able to give the new Matrix Peli-cure treatment a try.  This treatment is a great, quick and inexpensive add-on (only $5 with other services) to any Matrix salon visit!  It combines their new Carbonizing Powder with their intensely nourishing hair masks for a treatment that helps to penetrate the shaft for hair that is more manageable, soft and shiny.

My hair was touchably soft and full of life after the Peli-cure treatment!

I had an amazing time learning about the new Biolage products and will definitely be sharing more information in the next few months – and if you’re really good, I just might have a giveaway up my sleeve too!  Have you ever tried any Biolage products?  Will you be giving the new ones a try?
