Hi guys!  I’m taking a week off from life to unplug and hang out in Orlando.  This week is going to be all about relaxing and having a little fun – and yes, I’m definitely going to be checking out Disney World (OMG, Disney princesses…) and Universal Studios (HARRY POTTER LAND).  Anyways, since I’m taking this time to regroup, I’ve enlisted the help of some of my fellow Canadian Beauty Bloggers to bring some amazing content my way.  Today’s post comes from Ling Chiu of The Cosmetic Critic.  Make sure you give her a follow below to check out some more amazing content from her 🙂

Hi! My name’s Ling and I blog over at The Cosmetic Critic. Thanks Dee for having me guest post and hopefully you’re having fun away 🙂

As all beauty junkies know, it’s really hard to finish beauty products, and rather rare concerning makeup. Having a backup of something is usually an indication of something well loved, enough so that we spend our limited funds on products that we might not even get to open.

Well, that’s the case for most people. I’m not like most people since I’m (supposed to be) on a budget, thus I own products that I don’t necessarily want backups of, though some of them are items that I do genuinely like.

A lot of people rave about the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder, but honestly I don’t get the hype. Yeah, it’s a nice drugstore powder but it’s really not that exceptional. I do have a backup but only because it was on sale and I thought it would be worthwhile to go buy another (even though I rarely hit pan on powders…).

Another powder that I have a backup of is the e.l.f. Essential Clarifying Powder. It’s not that great honestly since it’s kind of chalky, but it makes up for it through it’s strong pigmentation. My sister bought these but I don’t understand why since they’re several shades too light for her. As a result, I now possess them since they are a much better shade match on me.

She also gifted me 2 deluxe samples of the Elisa Coy Always Nuddy CC Cream (of which I already had one of). While I haven’t been using it much lately, it’s still a nice product that I’m attempting to use more now.

I love The Face Shop’s Design My Eyebrow pencil since it’s such a good match for my brows. So much so that I purposely purchased another since I knew I would finish the one that I’m currently using (and likely to finish soon).

Lip balms are one of the few types of products that actually make sense for me to repurchase since I go through them so quickly. My top picks are Nivea and eos lip balms, so I always have them on hand. I’m not really a fan of Softlips since it’s of the methanol variety, but they are life savers when I have uncomfortable lips.
What products do you own back ups of?

This season, Luxe Box, a Canadian beauty subscription company,  has teamed up with Benefit Cosmetics to offer a Limited Edition Bene-Boutique (get on the wait-list here – it’s coming soon) for Spring 2015!  This upgrade is being offered as a complimentary upgrade for members, and for any Benefit lovers, it’s definitely worth getting.

First of all, can I just have a second to talk about how freaking cute this box is?  The products come housed in a “Benefit Boutique” – which may have been inspired by Benefit’s upcoming store opening in Toronto.  Oh yes, I’m very excited about this btw.  A whole store dedicated to the brand?  I’ll be making regular stops.

Anyways, this LE box contains samples of some of Benefit’s most popular products (chances are you’ve tried at least one or two of these along the way – and fallen in love): the POREfessional, they’re real! mascara (check back later this week, I have a surprise to share with you that has to do with this mascara!), benetint & it’s potent! eye cream.  I love these minis, and they’re perfect for taking on overnight trips – most of these will be joining me on my Florida vacation later this month.  This box also contains a full-size tube of gimme brow, which is awesome for those of you looking to up your brow game.  It helps to add fibers to the brows to help them look fuller and more defined, and will be available in both the light-medium and medium-dark shades depending on the answers in your beauty profile.  This box also contains a card for a free brow wax at a Benefit Brow Bar… If you know anything about Benefit, it’s that they take their brows very seriously, and I have seen many a happy customer after getting their brows done with them.

This box has a $78 value and like I said earlier, is available as a complimentary upgrade for Luxe Box members.  Memberships are available on three different price plans (quarterly for $26/box), semi-annually for $25/box and annually for $24/box).  As part of the membership, you receive a box every season fun of amazing beauty discoveries for you to enjoy.  This season’s regular and Beauty in Bloom Limited Edition box will also feature amazing products from eyeko, Too Faced, Vita Liberata, Soap & Glory and more.  If you sign up through my unique link (not a referral), you’ll also save $2 off per box!  Don’t forget to get on the Bene-Boutique wait list so you don’t miss out!

You guys, Valentine’s Day is only 2 weeks away!  I’ve been working on a few things to help you get ready for this romantic day – and hey, it’s not all about the gifts as some would believe, but about taking a little time to show someone special you love them (which yes, we should be doing more often).  But hey, I’ve never had any complaints about an excuse to get a little dolled up.

the Berry-Light shade – my fave!

When it comes to getting ready for a little Valentine’s Day fun, of course the most important are to focus on is your lips.  Chances are there may be a little smoochin’ going down, and you’re going to want to find a lippy that not only looks good but softens and smoothes as well.

I think I’ve found the solution in new Almay Smart Shade Butter Kiss Lipsticks ($9.49 CAD).  These lipsticks were formulated with shea and coconut butter for intense moisture and hydration.  They’re creamy and glide on so smoothly.  My lips feel amazing once I’ve applied one of these.  They almost feel more like a tinted lip balm than a lipstick, which I really like.  That being said, they do give off a really nice pigment (more than you would find in most tinted balms depending on the shade).

Side by side comparison: Berry-Light, Red-Light, Nude-Light, Pink-Light

In keeping with their Smart Shade line, Almay has taken the guesswork out of figuring out which shades will compliment your skin tone the most.  Available in 4 shades (berry, red, nude & light), they come in three ranges for light, light-medium and medium skin tones (they have not developed a deep version, thought I’m sure the medium range would work well for this product) – but of course, you can play around to see if any of the shades designed for other skin tones will work for you!

Being the pale kid that I am I tried the “Light” range out in all four shades.  They all looked really lovely and felt amazing.  As you can see above, the berry and red shades had a lot more colour and effect, with the nude and pink shades adding just a hint of a different tone to the lips.  My personal favourite out of the 4 is the Berry-Light shade – I love it’s beautiful colour, and it gives the lips a gorgeous flush.  I’m really loving the soft, smoothing texture of these lipsticks & the nice hint of colour that they add to my look.

Well, New Year’s Eve is almost here.  It’s the perfect chance to get all glam and glitzy.  My favourite part?  There’s no need to be afraid of a little sparkle here and there – you can go all out, load on the glitter, and have a little fun.  In between trying to pick out the perfect NYE outfit and trying to decide where to go and what to do, I’ve put together a fun New Year’s Eve look with a little help from Hard Candy (available exclusively at Walmart) to help you get prepped for the big night.

I went with a few fun product from Hard Candy to put this look together.  I didn’t want it to be too over the top, but had fun adding some sparkle to my eyes and went with a more purple toned palette to add a bit of colour.  Check out the products I used and steps to recreate this look for your NYE!

  1. I started off by applying Sheer Envy Illuminating Primer to my fave to help prep the skin.  This primer has got quite a bit of sparkle to it, so you may want to go easy on it if you don’t want to end up looking like a vampire from Twilight.  It has a bit of a gel consistency, and helps to set everything up for makeup application.  I then used Glamoflauge Lite to cover up any redness and spots.
  2. For the eyes, I started off with Eye Def.  This shimmery, pearly liquid shadow actually worked perfectly as a base so help bring out the colour in the shadows.  From there, I used the Mod Quad baked eye shadow palette in Under the Moon for colour.  I used the lightest shade all over  up to the brow bone then applied the top right shade to the lid.  I used the bottom left shade in the crease to add some definition and a bit of the darkest shade to add a hint of liner.  After applying black mascara, I finished off with a bit of Lash Tinsel to add some sparkle and fun to my eyes.
  3. For the lips, I started off by applying All Glossed Up in Tickled Pink for a bit of a pink tint and then added a little Plumping Serum in Nude Beach for some more shine.

What will you be wearing for New Year’s Eve?
