Tired of being the girl next door? Take your look from sweet to sexy with these tips on your next night out:
Change your locks. Add a bit of colour to your hair with L’Oreal Professionnel Hairchalk ($25, available at salons). Try throwing a fun colour like pink or red into your hair. If you’re not ready to commit to a bold shade, this washes out after about 2 shampoos, so you can go a little wild without permanent colour. A bit of colour on the lower layers of your hair makes for a trendy surprise.
With the Oscars tonight, there’s never been a better time to talk red carpet beauty. Whether you’re planning on walking the red carpet, hitting up an Oscars party or just getting glam for a night out, here are a few tips that will help take your look to celeb heights.

A red lip is a classic that never goes out of style!
Lately, I’ve been giving a lot more thought to the products that I use and what goes into them. What we use on our bodies goes in our bodies, so to speak, and more and more companies are making it easier to make choices that we can feel confident about when it comes to purchasing these. When I heard of the new Matrix Biolage R.A.W. (click through for more info) line, a collection of hair products designed to be “Real, Authentic and Wholesome” I knew I had to give it a try.
The collection of shampoos, conditioners and clay masks was created with the intention of developing a lineup of products with an origin that is as natural as possible. They contain amazing natural ingredients, like coconut oil, kaolin clay, quinoa husk and black sesame, to provide hair with a wholesome treatment that doesn’t take away from performance. The products all have up to 95% natural origin, and are free of silicones, sulfates (a big one for me, as someone who colours their hair) and parabens. And, to make things even better, all of the packaging is 100% recyclable and made from consumer recycled materials.
I’ve tried out all three pairs of the Matrix Biolage R.A.W. shampoo and conditioner, and I’ve had a really positive experience with all three; I can honestly say that they don’t compromise on performance, and leave the hair feeling great. I’m really enamored with the Uplift Shampoo and Conditioner. I have fine hair that tends to fall flat, especially after the second and third day, but but with the use of this I’ve actually noticed that my hair has a bit more lift and maintains its body after a few days, which is key for me. Black sesame and grapefruit help to purify, while kiwi and kaolin clay condition without weighing the hair down at the root. I’m also a fan of using the Nourish and Recover pairs for the few washes before I colour my hair – they help to restore moisture and softness that makes colouring easier and more effective, while minimizing damage.
They also all have amazing natural (and eco-friendly!) scents – it really says something about the product when you can smell the ingredients.
Overall, are these RAW products a success? I’m very happy to report that the Matrix Biolage R.A.W. collection lives up to their intentions. The ingredients that were sourced help to provide amazing benefits for the hair, while maintaining a wholesome balance. I’m a big fan of these and will definitely continue using them to keep my hair healthy.
Oh, you know we’ve all been there. Whether you’re lazy, want to sleep in, don’t feel like styling your hair or just straight up want to keep working your hair’s texture, there comes a time (ok, many times) in a girl’s life where she doesn’t want to wash her hair. I try to go 3-4 days in between washes to prevent over washing and styling and to help prolong the length of my colour.
THIS is why dry shampoo is one of my best friends. It soaks up oil and refreshes your mane so you look like you just washed – perfect for getting a few extra days out of your wash. I’ve used it for years and have tried just about every one I’ve been able to get my hands on.
A few of my tips when it comes to using dry shampoo:
Don’t get too close – hold the can about 8-10 inches away from your hair so the product doesn’t get too concentrated in one area, which can lead to buildup and make blending more difficult (especially if you have darker hair)
Section it off – spray it on your roots in layers to make sure the product is dispersed evenly throughout your mane. There’s nothing worse than leaving the house only to find that a section of your hair is still visibly oily.
Give it time – Once you’ve applied your dry shampoo, give it time to work its magic and soak up the oil; don’t brush it through right away. Let it sit for at least 5-10 minutes – I say apply it before you start getting ready, do your makeup then massage it in.
Sleep on it – Better yet? Spray it on before you go to sleep, and let it work overnight. In the morning, brush your hair and wake up to fresh locks! Honestly, this is my favourite way to use it.
I’ve rounded up a few of my fave dry shampoos to hopefully help you find your new favourite. Check ’em out below. and share your dry shampoo loves in the comments below!
The OG: The first dry shampoo I ever tried (years ago), and still one of my favourites to this day, the Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk is the one that started my love affair with this stuff. It really is the OG of dry shampoo – it’s been around since 1971, and leaves the hair feeling fresh and clean with a little help from oat milk. Bonus: it’s now available in a shade that works better for brown to dark hair.
The Rockstar: The Rock Your Hair Spray It Clean Dry Shampoo is fantastic, and one of the best I’ve come across. The scent is super fresh, it blends in really well, and leaves my hair looking unbelievably clean while giving it great texture. Lately, I’ve found myself reaching for it more often and have had to restock a few times in the past months.
The Style Reviver: I mean, the L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni Art Morning After Dust was named that for a reason. This invisible dry shampoo helps to add texture and gives the hair a great scent, so you can keep on looking fab when you aren’t necessarily feeling that way. Oh, and it’s invisible to HD cameras, so you don’t have to worry about it showing up on film – snap away!
The Bargain Beauty: While some of these dry shampoos come with a bit of a higher price tag than some might like to pay, there’s nothing like finding the perfect drugstore equivalent, which is why I absolutely love the Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo. Not only does it come with a price that’s lighter on the wallet, it really works. The scent is lovely, and it does a great job of refreshing my style when I’m on the go. I also find that it blends in really well compared to most other dry shampoos I’ve tried. Plus, it’s paraben free!
The Lifesaver: Running late for an important event or meeting and don’t have time to wash? the Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo will be your best friend. This dry shampoo is very lightweight, yet effective, leaving the hair looking soft and fluffy. I do find this one takes a little more work to blend into dark hair, so use it lightly – you don’t need much for it to work anyways! A light, clean scent also helps to lock in the fresh feeling.
The New Kid on the Block: Ok, though it’s not technically a dry shampoo, I felt that the Drybar Detox Dry Conditioner deserved a place on this list because it too helps to freshen up your style. While dry shampoo works on the roots, this is sprayed on the hair from midshaft through lengths, helping to soften and hydrate the hair – it’s perfect for those with dry ends who need a little help to keep their hair looking and feeling healthy as you upkeep your hair between washes. It also adds a really nice dose of shine, making this perfect before going out after a long day.
Are you a fan of dry shampoo? Which one is your favourite?
Ahhhh summer. We’ve finally hit that beautiful time of year in Toronto where the heat starts ratcheting up. We’ve already had some days with higher than normal temperatures (which I will not complain about) and I’m sure it’s only going to continue to go up from here. You may have also seen that I spent a few weeks in Costa Rica visiting my parents last month, and it was very hot down there – sweating from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed hot. No matter the situation, higher temperatures can make getting ready a bit more of a challenge, especially when you don’t have AC.
When you spend 90% of your time in the water on while on vacay, you need quick, easy styling!
When the temperatures start to rise, it’s so much easier to cut down on your beauty routine so you spend less time getting ready and more time enjoying the weather. Not only that, but the less effort you have to put in the better – you’ve got to keep cool! I brought some Kérastase PARIS products down to CR with me to help out with this; with a combo of the right products and expert steps, I was able to pull off nearly effortless beachy waves without the heat styling that has become such a big part of my routine throughout the rest of the year.
Colin D Ford, Kérastase PARIS Artistic & Education Director, shared some great steps with me to help me achieve the perfect beachy wave, and lucky for you, I’m going to share them with you today (note that the italics are extra notes from my experience).
So, how can you easily achieve beach waves without all the extra work? Here are Colin’s tips:
Prep hair with Kérastase OLEO CURL, which is a leave-in conditioner with an anti-frizz action and a relaxed curl. Apply about the size of a quarter into your palms, spread through your hands and then work through the mid lengths and ends of the hair.
Alternatively, if your hair has a light texture then spray WONDER WORKER from Shu Uemura into the mid-lengths and ends. This is ideal for air drying the hair. It will aid in detangling, conditioning and smoothing the hair while taming any frizz. (I actually like to use both of these in my hair to prep for styling – using the two doesn’t weigh the hair down and helps to keep the hair feeling as great as it looks)
Comb your hair through with a large wide toothed comb to ensure even distribution of the product.
Next, apply CURL FEVER from Kérastase, a light-weight gel specifically designed for giving some control and definition to curly or wavy hair. Once distributed through the hair, shake and leave to dry naturally. This will allow the hair to dry without becoming fluffy. (If you want a more relaxed wave, Kérastase BOUCLES D’ART Aqua-Mousse is another great option. It adds a little more body and softens the look of the waves)
Once your hair is dry, use TEXTURE WAVE from Shu Uemura. This is a dry finishing spray and will give you an undone yet moveable and beachy waves. Spray 8 to 10 inches away from the hair and simply work it in with your fingers to achieve your desired finished look. (I like to spritz this in from the mid-shaft down and scrunch/fluff my hair to give it a little more “attitude”)
