I’m going to start this off by letting you know that I’m an absolute Halloween fanatic. October 31st is, hands down, my favourite day of the year, and I usually start choosing my costume for next year as soon as the holiday has passed. This year, I’m finally being a mermaid, and completely DIYing my costume (I can share deets on this if anyone’s interested!). In the meantime, I wanted to share this subtle Candy Corn Manicure. I do realize that not everyone gets as worked up about Halloween as I do or prefer to take a more subtle approach to Halloween beauty; this easy nail art will give you a chance to get into the spirit without going overboard.

Oh, and did I mention it’s easy? Because it really is. My dad could probably pull this off.

Start off by prepping your nails with base coat to smooth (Formula X Color Corrector is perfect for this) and one-two coats of white polish (I used OPI Alpine Snow for this one). Prep your cuticles with a hydrating moisturizer or apply white glue or a cuticle guard to make clean up easier.

Next, take a triangular cosmetics sponge (you can pick these up at the dollar store) and trim it to get a piece that’s similar in width to your nails. Starting from the top, apply a wide stripe of polish in white, followed by a soft yellow (I used OPI Infinite Shine in Bee Mine Forever) and finished with a stripe of a soft orange shade (Essie Gel Couture in Looks to Thrill), layering them like a neopolitan ice cream that will fit from base to tip of your nails. Dab on a piece of paper a couple of times to blend the colours together a little, then gently dab onto your nails to transfer the polish and create the candy corn look. Reapply the polish to the sponge as needed, and try to do a couple of coats to build the colour. Once finished, apply a top coat (Seche Vite dries quickly and locks in colour) to blend the polish even more and secure the look.

Will you be trying this Candy Corn Manicure or any Halloween nail art?

As a beauty junkie, I’m constantly checking out new products. Once in a while, something comes along that gets me so excited that I can’t wait to share it. If you follow me on Snapchat (not a bad idea, if you want to keep up on the exciting new launch and events like the one I’m attending this weekend – follow me at deetommy), you might have seen that I was recently able to check out the new Essie Gel Couture nail polishes, which promise long lasting, gel-like results at home without the use of a UV or LED light. I’ve tried many of these at-home gel polishes, but I have to say this is one that truly lives up to its expectations – it really blew me away!

The 2 step system (2 coats of colour + the specially designed top coat) promise up to 14(!) days of wear, which is really incredible. I’ve seen the results on other people, and I’m personally on day 9 of my first application. The colour still looks amazing and I haven’t had any chips as of yet, which is a big deal for me. I’m the gal who’s polish likes to chip by the end of day 1. The shine has dulled a little (and by that, I mean very little) but that can be easily fixed by applying another layer of top coat. I have noticed a bit of wear along the tips of the nails, as I would expect, but it’s definitely not noticeable. My biggest issue? My nails are growing out quickly and the gap at the base is getting wider and wider, meaning I might be taking this off soon – but hey, I can’t blame Essie for that. I suggest applying as closely to the cuticle as possible to maximize wear time. Oh and for those of you wondering, I’ve been rocking the Essie Gel Couture polish in Dress Call.

Now, as this is a new line for Essie, we also see the introduction of a chic new bottle. Inspired by the swirl of a couture gown, the new collection features a bottle with a twirl shape, which will happily be on display on my polish shelves. And if the design isn’t enough for you, the collection itself will do you in. With 42 brand new shades, this brings about a large expansion to the Essie family. A wide range of shades that starts with graceful pastels, leading into bright statement makers and finishes with smoldering deep hues, I’m willing to bet there will be more than a few you’ll want to take home. The formula is fantastic as well – the polishes apply smoothly with no streaks (I was impressed with the potency of them after just one coat), and two coats will give full colour. Finish off with the top coat to seal the deal and lock in colour with high shine.

To further expand on the new design, Essie has also introduces its new patent-pending swirl stem brush for perfect application. The swirled stem picks up just enough polish for the bottle and hangs on to it to avoid drips, while the wider, tapered brush makes application a snap.

All in all, I’m pretty impressed with the Essie Gel Couture collection so far. The formula is amazing, and combined with the top coat, the results truly do last. Will you be giving these a try? What shades do you hope to see?

The Essie Gel Couture collection is available June 14, 2016 for $13.99 CAD/bottle.

Essie Summer 2016 Collectiion

I’m a very excited gal for a few reasons today:

  1. Spring has (knock on wood) finally arrived in Toronto! We’re supposed to hit 20 degrees this weekend. Can I get a “hell yeah”?
  2. I’m running away to Costa Rica for 2 weeks on Tuesday. Come onnnnnn Tuesday!
  3. The Essie Summer 2016 collection has landed on my desk, and they absolutely nailed it with this one.

Inspired by the lush and beautiful Antigua, Essie’s Global Color Director Rebecca Minkoff captured the bright, vivid hues of the island and bottled them for our enjoyment.

“What makes Antigua is so special is the people; they’re so warm and kind, you begin to feel like a local. Going to the market to buy some fresh fruit becomes an epic discovery of culture, history and of course, gorgeous handmade fabrics and tribal text-styles. Their vivid, saturated colors reflecting the local flora can be seen everywhere” – Rebecca Minkoff, Essie Global Color Director

Available May 17, 2016, these 6 shades complement each other beautifully and are going to make for some beautiful summer nail art & manis – I can’t wait to try recreating some of the looks that Rita Remark created using these!

Essie Coconut Cove

Essie Coconut Cove – This “sweet cream white” is exactly that – a beautiful white shade with a finish that keeps it from being too stark. Although a bit streaky at first application (it is white, after all), after two coats it evened out for a smooth finish. This one will be so nice to use as a base for a little nail art using the other shades!

Essie Berried Treasures

Essie Berried Treasures – This “bright ruby berry” is just so tropical, it screams “take me to the beach.” This super pigmented polish has an almost jelly finish with tons of shine, and applies really nicely. Definitely a favourite of mine from this collection.

Essie Hiking Heels Swatch

Essie Hiking Heels – This shade will get your temperature up! The “scorching hot lava red” is definitely the summertime equivalent of the deep reds that I covet during the colder seasons, warming it up a notch and making it, dare I say, spicy. Again, gorgeous shine and an almost jelly like look finish this one off.

Essie Viva Antigua! Swatch

Essie Viva Antigua! – I actually squealed when I pulled this one out of its packaging – it reminds me of a mermaid, and yes, I wish I was a mermaid. The namesake polish of the collection, this “iridescent crystalline turquoise” is so pretty. Hints of shimmer scattered throughout the beautiful turquoise give it a fun finish. You will need 2-3 coats for full coverage, as it is a little on the more sheer side, but the finish is worth it.

Essie Loot the Booty Swatch

Essie Loot the Booty – Hold. The. Phone. This one is gorgeous, and hands down my favourite of the collection. Reminiscent of Starry Starry Night, this “pavé sapphire blue” is a stunning cobalt shade has gorgeous shimmer that transforms from turquoise to purple in the light. It’s also deeply pigmented and has shine for days. I’m in love.

Essie Tribal Text-Styles Swatch

Essie Tribal Text-Styles – Last but not least, and definitely a little out of the ordinary for a summer collection, we have this “black gold and crushed onyx” shade. The amount of shimmer (though not necessarily gold) packed into this polish keeps it from being too moody for a summer shade, adding a bit of lightness that makes it pop and stand out from typical black shades. It’s not as shiny as the others, but a good top coat really makes this one stand out.

Will you be picking anything up from the Essie Summer 2016 collection?

After Hayley Elsaesser’s showing last season at World Mastercard Fashion Week, I couldn’t wait to see what’s in store for spring. Hayley’s esthetic is loud & colourful, and needs a beauty look that mimics this bold style. In saying that, essie & Maybelline absolutely did not disappoint!

Taking inspiration directly from the pattern on one of Elsaesser’s pieces, Rita Remark (Lead Nail Artist for essie Canada & Global Lead Educator) created a shimmering raibow ombré look that perfectly reflected this look.

Fab, right? Of course, you can easily play around with colours to get a look that’s more your style. I’ll be sharing details on the makeup soon!

While things have been crazy busy here in Toronto for TIFF, we can’t forget that NYFW is taking place too! I’ve been trying to stay on top of all of the shows, trends and beauty looks when I’ve had a minute to spare here and there, and want to make sure you do as well. I’ll be sharing some of my favourite looks from the runways to give you a little beauty inspiration, starting with Essie’s looks for the Wes Gordon and Rebecca Minkoff shows.

For Wes Gordon, Rita Remark (our very own and Essie’s new Global Lead Educator – congrats girl!) created a really interesting mani with a geometric take that brings together both matte and shiny textures – I know this look was created for Spring 2016, but I can’t wait to try it out this fall – the warm feel is perfect and feels like suede and leather came together on the nails. She used In the Lobby and Devil’s Advocate with a little Matte About You topcoat for cool texture.

Essie polishes were also use to create the look for Rebecca Minkoff’s SS 16 show – which makes sense, considering she is the Global Color Designer for the brand. I’m really digging this beautiful sunset ombré look, which combines Tart Deco, Marshmallow, Beach Bum Blue, Midnight Cami and Spaghetti strap, applied with a sponge, to create a beautiful layered look.
