Today I’m going to be sharing a few easy tips for better blog photos. These are quick ideas that you can put into action fairly quickly to take your blog and Instagram photography to the next level! Watch the video below and read on for more details.

Tips for better blog photos:

  1. Perfect your flatlays!
    • This means playing around with different props. I love the dollar store for finding different items to fit in with a photo’s theme or to give it a quick little boost. I find that they’re treasure troves of fun little items that you can use to accessorize or add a little character – think things like fake flowers, gems and home decor.
    • Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box! Play around with the layout of the products you’re focusing on. There’s not set way or formula to lay out your shot, so have fun with it and find something that works with your aesthetic.
    • Floor tiles make great backgrounds for photos and can add nice texture to the background of a shot. Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations, other reuse centers and hardware stores carry tons of different options and are usually pretty inexpensive. Other items like scrapbook paper, coloured construction paper and cutting/serving blocks are great for this as well. Try playing around with a couple different options at the same time to create a unique look!
  2. Play around with lighting!
    • Natural light is the best lighting your going to get. Try shooting in the morning when the light is pure if you live somewhere with access to lots of it!
    • If you don’t have a ton of natural light, like myself, you can purchase decently priced lighting sets online to make things easier for you. I use umbrella lights for my product photography and a ring light for face shots – they brighten your skin and give it a nice glow.
  3. Edit your photos before they go live!
    • Photoshop is  fantastic resource and one of the most in depth ways to edit your photos. Play around with your shots to make them as perfect as possible before you share them. If you’re new to Photoshop, there are tons of tutorials available online to help you learn how to properly edit your photos.
    • If you’re on a budget, there are many free alternatives to Photoshop that will give you great results. Try programs like Picasa, PicMonkey and GIMP to clean up your photos.
    • Shooting from your phone? There are many great photo editing apps available that allow you to edit directly from your phone. I’m a big fan of Snapseed, Afterlight and Color Story for my mobile editing.

This month marks a big milestone for me. I started Liner and Glitter and Gloss, Oh My! 5 years ago this month. Looking back, it seems crazy to think that I’ve been doing this for so long.

5 years ago, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know how to run a blog, how to take pictures that (usually) look nice or where it could take me. I was fresh out of university and working at a job that I didn’t enjoy and didn’t see a future in, which led to the creation of this blog. I needed an outlet to help me express myself and this was the perfect opportunity. I had always loved writing & all things beauty, and this seemed like a great way to combine the two.

Ever since then, it’s been a learning experience – and an amazing one at that. I’ve been able to develop my writing skills and work on my photography (I look back at my earlier posts and laugh), I’ve learned what people like you want to see and read about, and I’m still constantly learning!

Two of the best friends a girl could ask for – Sandra and Jenelle!

Through the blog, I’ve been received so many opportunities that I never would have had, and I’m so thankful for that every day. I’ve met some of my best friends, I’ve worked with some amazing brands, I’ve gotten to attend fantastic events… And, yes, I’ve built a beauty room that makes my friends envious.

I’ve had ups and downs; times where I’ve had to take little breaks to deal with things in my life, times where I’ve had to rebuild my motivation, and times where I’ve been on top of the world.

And above all that, I’ve had a chance to connect with you. I’m so thankful that people actually take the time to listen to what I have to say, and I always love hearing from someone who’s stopped by. If you ever want to connect with me, I’m always online (you can find me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram)! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me in the years to come. Thank you for joining me on this journey.

And hey, because a 5 year blogiversary wouldn’t be a celebration without presents, so I have a little giveaway up my sleeve. I’ve put together a beauty prize pack with some of my favourite things (worth about $500) that I’m going to be sending out to one of you. Enter via the the form below!

I fell in love with Rimmel’s matte Kate Moss lipstick collection a while back when it was released – I loved the colours, the texture and the matte finish. The deeper shades were so fantastic, and I know I wasn’t the only one impressed with the collection. When I found out that they were putting out a nude lineup, the Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Nude Collection, which recently launched, I had super high hopes. I’m not always a nude lip kinda gal – I go for a bit more drama when it comes to my pout – I couldn’t wait to at least give it a try.

The collection is comprised of 4 nude shades and a bonus lip balm. I didn’t try the lip balm, so I can’t speak to that, but I did give the 4 lipstick shades a try. Read on for swatches and my thoughts on them below!

Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Nude swatches (L-R): 40, 42, 43, 45

Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Nude Lipstick in 40

40 – The lightest shade in the collection. This lipstick is very light, and unfortunately just didn’t jive with me. It’s just way too light for me, and I’m hella pale even in the summer. It had a very patchy look when I applied it and gave me a bit of trouble as I tried to give it more of a smooth look. Unfortunately, this one was a strike for me. It might suit someone with more neutral undertones a little more – I do have more of a pink undertone to my complexion.

Rimmel Last Finish by Kate Moss Nude Lipstick in 42

42 – This shade is a bit darker than 40, with more of a peach hue to it. Again, it is quite light, though not too pigmented. It’s not my first choice, but I can see myself wearing this from time to time – still a bit light with my complexion.

43 – The next shade down, this has a bit more of a tan look to it, which unfortunately didn’t seem to work too well for me. It came out a little too orange on my skin than I would have liked at first, but I got used to it after wearing for a little while. That being said, I think this would be a great match for someone with a bit more of a tan complexion or more golden tones.

Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Nude Lipstick in 45

45 – Finally, I found the shade that I personally can work with the most! The deepest shade of the 4 that I tried, and also the sheerest, gives off a rose tone that I really like. I personally prefer nudes that go a little darker and work with my natural lip colour – and that’s exactly what this shade does. It’s creamy and lovely and gives a really nice bit of rosy colour.

What do you think of the Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Moss Nude Collection? Will you be trying any shade from it?

Well, here we go again… It’s time for another Target designer collection – and this one I’m beyond excited for.  Last night, it was announced that the next limited edition collection will be Lilly Pulitzer for Target.  Cue beachy, resort wear and bright, bold prints.

“Style isn’t just about what you wear, it’s about how you live” – Lilly Pulitzer

Known for her iconic prints, which originated as she created her individualistic shift dresses which she wore working at her lemonade stand (Jackie Kennedy was a fan), Pulitzer was one of the pioneers of American resort wear.

This fun collection is anything but boring, and boasts an astounding 250 pieces ranging from apparel, accessories & shoes to outdoor entertaining accessories & travel essentials.  My only issue?  It comes out after my trip to Florida next month – I’ve already spotted a few pieces from the collection that I wish I could take along with me… For example, the adorbs starfish sandals below.

This limited edition offering features 15 new prints which were created exclusively by Lilly Pulitzer artists for Target.  I’m already drooling over all the bright, fun and completely eye-catching items (those umbrellas – oh em gee.) and can guarantee I’ll be out the door first thing in the morning on April 19th (launch date) to get to my local Target.  And since it comes out the day before my birthday, I don’t have to feel guilty about buying everything… Right?

The Lilly Pulitzer for Target collection will be available in stores in the U.S. and Canada along with Target.com on April 19th.  I’ll be sure to share photos from the line when I have them.  Are you excited for this collection?
