Tired of being the girl next door? Take your look from sweet to sexy with these tips on your next night out:
Change your locks. Add a bit of colour to your hair with L’Oreal Professionnel Hairchalk ($25, available at salons). Try throwing a fun colour like pink or red into your hair. If you’re not ready to commit to a bold shade, this washes out after about 2 shampoos, so you can go a little wild without permanent colour. A bit of colour on the lower layers of your hair makes for a trendy surprise.
As you may have noticed, makeup this spring is all about colour; adding bright pops of it into your look is a really easy way to update for the new season and freshen up. The new L’Oreal Paris Infallible Paints Lip are a surefire way to inject a little more of this springtime trend into your look without having to go too far out of your comfort zone.
Available in a variety of shades ranging from deep plums to neutral nudes to popping pinks, with a side of bold (there’s a killer navy shade available, not pictured here), they’ve created a really nice selection of shades to flatter different styles and skintones. I’ve personally been on a bit of a nude kick and have been loving lip shades with a bit of a dusty rose feel, so Nude Star (312) has been a favourite of mine. When I feel like being a bit bolder, I also like to swipe a bit of Sultry Sangria (326) on.
The lip paints come with a curved applicator with a bit of a pointed tip, so application is really comfortable and it’s easy to perfect your lines. I’m a big fan of the formulation of these; they’re creamy and soft, so your lips never feel dried out. They have a soft, slightly shiny finish that gives the lips a bit of a plump look.
Another win with these comes with their pigmentation. The colour is exactly what you would expect from looking at the tubes, and they provide really strong colour that blends easily. Some of the darker shades can be a bit streaky if you apply a little heavily, but they can be easily blended by patting with your finger or a tissue.
I’m a big fan of combining matte and shimmery shades in an eye look, so this palette instantly gave me a good feeling. It’s also a really nice all-encompassing palette with more neutral shades that cover a range of shadows; cool pewters, warm rosy shades and sunny bronze hues all fit together into this 12 shade palette, allowing for you to mix and match depending on your mood.
The top two rows of shadows are all matte, while the bottom two rows have a shimmery finish. The matte shadows apply really smoothly, though I was a little disappointed with the shades in the top row; they didn’t have very much pigmentation and didn’t show up very well on my skin, either wet or dry (as you’ll see in the following swatches). The second row did have a lot more colour to it, and these shadows make for a great base shade. The shimmery shades are so rich and pigmented that I don’t really mind all that much. They look gorgeous on, and when applied wet, the colour is so metallic and bold that it’s hard to look away.
First column, applied dry on left and wet on right. From L-R: Vintage, Fringe, Bohemian, Smolder
Second column, applied dry on left and wet on right. From L-R: Velvet, Suede, Retro, Sizzle
Third column, applied dry on left and wet on right. From L-R: Feathered, Velour, Sequin, Flare
The palettes were also designed to make creating an eye look really simple. Follow the columns for a set of four shadows that come together for a harmonious look, and adjust intensity as you see fit. The bottom shades also make a great liner with a ton of impact, especially when applied wet!
I just love a good drugstore find. With the price of some palettes these days getting pretty hefty, I love having a combination of luxury and more budget-friendly picks in my makeup bag; it helps to keep both my wallet and my makeup-loving self happy. The COVERGIRL truNaked Jewels palette ($12.97 CAD) definitely fits into this category, and I’ll tell you why.
First of all, I love a palette that has a bit of colour in it – bolder shadows are always great for mixing into eye looks and for having a bit of fun. This palette has a selection of 8 shadows, including a range of matte, shimmer and sparkly shades. It has a few lighter shades (that are perfect if you’ve ever wanted to be a unicorn princess; hell, who hasn’t?), two bold, pigmented hues (blue and purple), shimmering gold and green shades and a sparkly black.
I really wish that I could have more accurately captured the first shade; it’s hard to see here, but it has this beautiful iridescent look to it with splashes of light pink in the light. It’s a gorgeous highlighting shade that I will definitely be using with other palettes and looks.
The shadows have nice pigment to them, and several shades that make for great highlighting (see the 1st, 3rd and 7th shadows). They are really blendable and build up to heavier colour if needed. They do tend to fade a bit throughout the day, so I suggest starting with a primer and finishing with a setting spray to ensure longer wear.
The shimmer in a few of the shadows is gorgeous – nice and soft, bringing a bit of a multi-tone look to them, which I love. The boldness of the purple and blue shadows also make them favourites for me; I can definitely see myself using them to add depth to many different looks.
What do you think of the COVERGIRL truNaked Jewels palette? Do you have any other jewel tones you like?
