OCTOBER IS HERE. Which means Halloween is really not far off…. Which makes me really excited. You see, Halloween is hands down my favourite day/time (I say time because it kinda lasts more than one day with parties & decorating and what not). I love to decorate, plan costumes and of course, throw a Halloween party. This year I’m throwing a party for friends at my new place and I really can’t wait to get decorating. I firmly believe that it’s totally alright to get all of your decorations up as soon as Thanksgiving passes which is why this post is going up ASAP – you’ve gotta get on it now to be ready for the 31st!
Since I’m such a Halloween addict I’ve pulled together some of my top picks from Amazon (ps. don’t forget to sign up for a Prime trial for fast shipping & better prices!) to make sure you’re ready for your own monster mash. I’ve broken it down into a few categories so you can make sure you have all of your bases covered. It’s time – get into my Halloween Party Prep must haves:
A Killer Costume
Deets: Wonder Woman, Sloth, Oktoberfest Girl, Sally, Eleven, Voodoo Doll, Belle, Ghostbuster, Fawn
Before you even think about getting into the party planning you’ve gotta make sure you’re going to look amazing. If you haven’t already spent the past few months trying to decide what you’re going to be now’s the time to do so. You only have a few weeks to make sure your costume is going to wow everyone so get to it. You can try something that you know will be a hit this year (think Wonder Woman, Ghostbusters, Belle) or go with something a little more fun or classic.
Deets: Scar tattoo stickers, Lip Gloss, hair chalk, nail decals, rainbow wig, Daenerys Targaryen wig
The right makeup can totally finish off a costume – make sure you have everything you need to complete your look. Not so into dressing up? That’s cool too. Throw on some fun nail decals and dark lipstick to get in the spirit.
Deets: Spiderweb mantle cover, lanterns, ghost curtain, replica skull, candelabra, wall decal
Now that you have your costume out of the way it’s time to set the mood for the party. Do you want something spooky and scary or a little more fun an playful? How about a theme? Last year I decorated my place
Deets: I’m Here For the Boos glasses, Skull shot glass, I’m A Witch glasses, Wine bottle labels, candy corn flask, Halloween straws
If you’re planning on serving up some spooky concoctions make sure you’re doing so in style. Find fun glassware that fits the mood and accessorize with cocktail napkins, straws and fun drink labels.
How do you get ready for a Halloween party?

A few months back I spotted this desk in my grandparents’ basement while storing a few things and I immediately fell in love. When I learned that it actually belonged to my mom when she was a teenager I knew that I wanted to restore it and turn it into something that I can use in my new home. I decided that a fresh coat of paint and colour update was exactly what it needed and decided to use Premier Paint from Canadian Tire to bring it back to life!
The desk was so pretty but definitely needed a little bit of TLC to fix it back up and restore it to how lovely it used to be and I knew it would take a little work. I decided to go with the Premier Active line because it has primer built in, which means less work in the long run, and great coverage. It’s also stain resistant, something that will definitely be useful for a desk.
Looking for a fun DIY project of your own? Follow these steps to paint an old desk (or other furniture)of your own; you can use a piece you have kicking around or try checking out garage sales and buy & sell groups on Facebook to find something that will fit into your home.
- Sand! The desk that I used already had paint on it, so I had to remove this before I could paint. Use a coarse grit sandpaper (I used 80) to break through and remove the existing paint or varnish. An electric sander is great for this and definitely makes the job easier. Afterwards, I went over everything with a fine grit (220) sandpaper to finish and prime the wood for painting.
- Clean the desk up. I used a vacuum to remove sawdust from the area so I wouldn’t have to worry about it getting into the paint and used a damp cloth to wipe down the desk and remove any dust from it.
- Prep the area! Make sure you cover anything nearby that you don’t want to get paint on so you don’t have to worry about accidents. Garbage bags work great for this in a pinch!
- Paint! I got to work with my Premier Active Paint from Canadian Tire in three shades (I used the shades Shy Rose, Powder Room & Charming Rose). You don’t need to prime the surface with this paint so I could get right into it. Make sure you paint all visible surfaces, including the top of the drawers and sides as they’ll be seen when pulled out. I went with two coats to maximize the look of the paint and it turned out great!
- Apply hardware to finish the look off. I picked up these great jeweled knobs at Canadian Tire and decided to keep the original handle for the long drawer as a nod to the original desk.
What do you think of my desk makeover? Do you have any fun DIY projects in the works? If you decide to try to paint an old desk I would love to hear about it!

I’ll go ahead and admit it; I’m a foundation hoarder. I’m constantly searching for my new favourite and have tried tons of different variations. A few new options have landed on my desk recently (including one that I’m obsessed with – more on this to come) and I’ve been spending some time diving in and testing them to find out what works. One of the newest additions to my collection is the NARS Velvet Matte Stick Foundation, NARS’ first foray into stick foundation.
This new foundation, available in a range of 20 shades, promises “instantly smooth, soft-matte perfection” allowing for full control of its use. It’s a double ended product, with the stick foundation on one end and a removable Touch-Up Blender on the other.
Application is really easy with this foundation. I actually haven’t used very many stick foundations in the past, maybe 1 or 2, so this is still relatively new territory for me. I suggest starting off a bit light with this foundation, applying a few swipes over the face (try the cheeks, forehead, chin and nose) before blending in and building up from there. I found that applying less of this foundation was better, as it seemed to sit on the skin and didn’t blend in very well when I added a bit more for extra coverage. The blending tool included is great for quick touch ups on the go but I prefer to use a brush to really blend this foundation in properly. It has a nice velvety texture once it’s been applied and blended in to the skin.
In terms of coverage, I find that this has a medium finish. It helps to even out my skin tone, cover redness and hide imperfections though I needed to use a bit of concealer afterwards to really cover the spots. It’s nice for daytime wear since it isn’t very heavy and blends in nicely. The finish for me isn’t completely matte; it leaves a little bit of a sheen, but I like to finish off with setting powder anyways so this isn’t a big issue for me.

When’s the last time you really treated your lips? I find that we all spend so much time on our face and body that they tend to be forgotten a bit and don’t always get the care that they need. Think about it; they’re exposed to weather issues and so many daily irritants and need proper care to keep them feeling soft and healthy. Don’t you think it’s time that we gave them the TLC they deserve? I’ve got you with these lip products that will have yours kiss-worthy in a flash.
Keep your lips feeling fresh by regularly exfoliating. This will help to remove dead skin cells and reveal softer, brighter-looking lips. A sugar scrub is great for a quick refresher, and using the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Perfecting Wand to massage will help to perk your natural colour back up.
Much like your skin, your lips can also use a night treatment to help restore them. Freshen them up while you sleep by applying the Dermalogica Nightly Lip Treatment before you go to bed, then let it get to work as it restores and reduces the appearance of fine lines.
Add a little colour while you keep your lips hydrated with the Clarins Daily Energizer Lovely Lip Balm. It reacts with your skin’s pH to create custom colour while you wear!
One of the biggest culprits of dried lips? Licking them! Wear a lip treatment, like Fresh Sugar Cream Lip Treatment Baby, that keeps your lips soft so you can avoid the urge.
If you’re going to be out and about, it’s always important to keep your lips protected from the sun – something we don’t always think about. Sun Bum Sunscreen Lip Balm has SPF 30 in it so you can keep your pout safe outside.
Add a dash of hydrating colour to your lips with a comforting lip oil like Elizabeth Arden Sheer Kiss Lip Oil. It was formulated with eight precious oils to hydrate and provide antioxidant rich colour.
If you’re lips are feeling a little dull, try a lip gloss with a bit of plumping power, like Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker, to perk them back up and give them a little more body.
What other lip products are you a fan of?
