Do you ever feel overwhelmed when it comes to trying new products out or purchasing something you’ve never needed before? It’s never easy when it comes to choosing something new. You don’t want to waste money on picking up something that doesn’t work or doesn’t do what you expect. It always helps to have someone guiding you which is why Shoppers Drug Mart recently introduced their Shoppers Top Picks program.
Throughout the store and online you’ll be able to find a selection of products that Shoppers Drug Mart has carefully chosen because they trust them. Between all of the Top Sellers, New Finds and Hidden Gems featured on the shelves, you’ll be able to shop a little more confidently knowing that you’ve got a winner in your hands. They’ve included a little bit of everything, sharing picks from the beauty, home, and health sections.
Last week, I had a chance to check out the Shoppers Top Picks activation that was set up at Sherway Gardens and got to get up close and personal with some of their top picks – I was really happy to find some of my favourite products listed and discovered a few new items that I can’t wait to pick up. Here are a few of my faves (oh, and some of them come with bonus Optimum points):
Batiste Cherry Dry Shampoo
Is there really any better season to do a little shopping than fall? I always feel so inspired to update everything when this time of year rolls around; it seems that there’s always something new to try, whether it be something on trend in your wardrobe, a different shade of eyeshadow or some gorgeous new home décor. With perfect timing, Oakville Place is going to be celebrating their grand reopening. The shopping centre recently received a bit of a makeover, with new interiors and common areas, a beautifully renovated entrance and a great selection of popular and new retailers (including Pusateri’s, Hudson’s Bay & Sephora).
To celebrate the grand reopening and help you update your life for the fall and winter, they’ll be putting on an amazing event this coming Saturday, October 14th from 1-5 pm in the Centre Court. The Tastes of the Season celebration is going to be full of seasonal inspiration. Make sure you stop by early to enjoy everything! And if you RSVP you’ll have a chance at winning dinner for two at the O&B Grill Cafe!
The event will be hosted by Krystin Lee of Suburban Faux Pas and will feature presentations by local experts throughout the afternoon that show off some of the biggest trends of the season:
Oh, and did I mention the gift bags? The first 200 guests will each receive an amazing swag bag with a value of $500! You’ll also be able to take advantage of giveaways, coupons, samples, demonstrations & more from various retailers both at Centre Court and throughout the mall. And if you want to get in on the action early, they’re giving away a $1000 Oakville Place shopping experience, which you can enter here.
You definitely won’t want to miss this one! I’ll be stopping by Oakville Place on Saturday to check out the grand reopening. See you there!
OCTOBER IS HERE. Which means Halloween is really not far off…. Which makes me really excited. You see, Halloween is hands down my favourite day/time (I say time because it kinda lasts more than one day with parties & decorating and what not). I love to decorate, plan costumes and of course, throw a Halloween party. This year I’m throwing a party for friends at my new place and I really can’t wait to get decorating. I firmly believe that it’s totally alright to get all of your decorations up as soon as Thanksgiving passes which is why this post is going up ASAP – you’ve gotta get on it now to be ready for the 31st!
Since I’m such a Halloween addict I’ve pulled together some of my top picks from Amazon (ps. don’t forget to sign up for a Prime trial for fast shipping & better prices!) to make sure you’re ready for your own monster mash. I’ve broken it down into a few categories so you can make sure you have all of your bases covered. It’s time – get into my Halloween Party Prep must haves:
A Killer Costume
Deets: Wonder Woman, Sloth, Oktoberfest Girl, Sally, Eleven, Voodoo Doll, Belle, Ghostbuster, Fawn
Before you even think about getting into the party planning you’ve gotta make sure you’re going to look amazing. If you haven’t already spent the past few months trying to decide what you’re going to be now’s the time to do so. You only have a few weeks to make sure your costume is going to wow everyone so get to it. You can try something that you know will be a hit this year (think Wonder Woman, Ghostbusters, Belle) or go with something a little more fun or classic.
Deets: Scar tattoo stickers, Lip Gloss, hair chalk, nail decals, rainbow wig, Daenerys Targaryen wig
The right makeup can totally finish off a costume – make sure you have everything you need to complete your look. Not so into dressing up? That’s cool too. Throw on some fun nail decals and dark lipstick to get in the spirit.
Deets: Spiderweb mantle cover, lanterns, ghost curtain, replica skull, candelabra, wall decal
Now that you have your costume out of the way it’s time to set the mood for the party. Do you want something spooky and scary or a little more fun an playful? How about a theme? Last year I decorated my place
Deets: I’m Here For the Boos glasses, Skull shot glass, I’m A Witch glasses, Wine bottle labels, candy corn flask, Halloween straws
If you’re planning on serving up some spooky concoctions make sure you’re doing so in style. Find fun glassware that fits the mood and accessorize with cocktail napkins, straws and fun drink labels.
How do you get ready for a Halloween party?

A few months back I spotted this desk in my grandparents’ basement while storing a few things and I immediately fell in love. When I learned that it actually belonged to my mom when she was a teenager I knew that I wanted to restore it and turn it into something that I can use in my new home. I decided that a fresh coat of paint and colour update was exactly what it needed and decided to use Premier Paint from Canadian Tire to bring it back to life!
The desk was so pretty but definitely needed a little bit of TLC to fix it back up and restore it to how lovely it used to be and I knew it would take a little work. I decided to go with the Premier Active line because it has primer built in, which means less work in the long run, and great coverage. It’s also stain resistant, something that will definitely be useful for a desk.
Looking for a fun DIY project of your own? Follow these steps to paint an old desk (or other furniture)of your own; you can use a piece you have kicking around or try checking out garage sales and buy & sell groups on Facebook to find something that will fit into your home.
- Sand! The desk that I used already had paint on it, so I had to remove this before I could paint. Use a coarse grit sandpaper (I used 80) to break through and remove the existing paint or varnish. An electric sander is great for this and definitely makes the job easier. Afterwards, I went over everything with a fine grit (220) sandpaper to finish and prime the wood for painting.
- Clean the desk up. I used a vacuum to remove sawdust from the area so I wouldn’t have to worry about it getting into the paint and used a damp cloth to wipe down the desk and remove any dust from it.
- Prep the area! Make sure you cover anything nearby that you don’t want to get paint on so you don’t have to worry about accidents. Garbage bags work great for this in a pinch!
- Paint! I got to work with my Premier Active Paint from Canadian Tire in three shades (I used the shades Shy Rose, Powder Room & Charming Rose). You don’t need to prime the surface with this paint so I could get right into it. Make sure you paint all visible surfaces, including the top of the drawers and sides as they’ll be seen when pulled out. I went with two coats to maximize the look of the paint and it turned out great!
- Apply hardware to finish the look off. I picked up these great jeweled knobs at Canadian Tire and decided to keep the original handle for the long drawer as a nod to the original desk.
What do you think of my desk makeover? Do you have any fun DIY projects in the works? If you decide to try to paint an old desk I would love to hear about it!
