DIY Brightening Face Scrub

Well, today is Earth Day – are you doing your part to make the world a little greener?  Of course, while we pay special attention to it today we should always be paying attention to the things we do and the way they affect the earth.  Now’s the perfect chance to get out and help clean up your community as well, with many planning events so that you can take part.  Just as a little side note to those in my area – you can take part in the Burlington Green Clean Up Green Up event on Saturday, April 26th and again on May 31st – you can find out more information here!

Anyways, I decided to share an Earth Day inspired post for you today – a DIY Brightening Facial Scrub.  You can easily make this at home using just a few ingredients for skin that is smoother and brighter.  Not only that, but you can store it in an air-tight container for up to 2 weeks so you can get multiple uses out of it.  I also want to mention that you can definitely swap out some of the ingredients to tailor this scrub to your needs.  Try different types of sugars/salts, oils and fruits to find the perfect combination for you.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (I went with brown sugar because it is the most gentle on the skin while still providing excellent exfoliation)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil (jam-packed with moisture and antioxidants)
  • Handful of strawberries, finely chopped (helps to brighten and even out the skin tone)

Directions:

  • Combine the brown sugar and coconut oil until blended together
  • Add in the fruit and “mash” into the sugar and coconut mixture to blend together and mix in the juices
  • Transfer the mixture to a resealable container – I found great ones at the dollar store – and store in the fridge to keep it fresh
  • When you want to use the scrub, grab a scoop and rub into your skin.  Don’t use too much pressure – you want to slough off the dead skin, but don’t want to irritate your face

Follow:
  • I have never seen a DIY scrub with strawberries. Great skincare recipe!

  • Cassandra Turcotte

Fantastic. You could even add some fresh lemon juice for an acidic exfoliation (and extra brightening), honey for moisturization, cinnamon even… That would be one hell of a scrub.

    • Would it ever… I usually add a bit of lemon for the exfoliation but decided to leave it out this time since some people have a bit of sensitivity to it. Those are all great additions though! I’ll have to add them in next time I make this!

I didn`t use this one but i will give it a try. I use scrub made of : almond oil, coffe and lemon.

  • I am totally trying this!! Where do you buy your coconut oil for DIYs from?

    • Yay! I get it from the health food store near my house – they always have lots of different varieties!

Oh my goodness, that looks good enough to eat! I have all these ingredients on hand and will be making it tonight. What did you use to blend and mash the ingredients?
    Thanks so much!

    • Let me know how it goes! I just used a spoon to blend it all together, with the curved side acting as a “masher.” If you have a muddler give that a try as well, it will be perfect for making sure the strawberries are blended in.

  • Victoria Ess

I have made DIY body scrubs with oil and sugar, but have never added strawberries to it. I can’t wait to try and see the effects it has on my skin.

  • Sherry Proch

The more DIY stuff I do the more money I save AND I know what is in it! Thanks for the post 🙂

  • Eldon Lai

Im gonna try this and save money instead of buying the expensive scrubs from Sephona.

This looks awesome! I made lemon sugar hand scrub with my students for Mother’s Day this year. Your post reminded me of making the scrub with my class. We put it in sealed containers and it keeps for up to a month. This scrub would be a great partner for next year’s gift!

  • Mahdi Martin

I love DIY face treatments! I make my own on a regular basis. Mine usually includes BC headache powder, (aspirin and caffeine), honey, turmeric, and a few drops of olive oil, or a special face oil. It also acts as a very gentle exfoliator, and is great for waking up a tired, achy face!

  • Bev

This face scrub recipe seems very easy! I will try it!
