Almay Shadow Softies (Photos + Swatches)

Last month at Spark Sessions, Canada’s First Fashion and Beauty Blogger Conference, I was introduced to Almay Shadow Softies, and was extremely excited to try some of them out.  They claimed to be a new, whipped shadow with 12 shades ranging from shimmery to matte and a very interesting range of colours.  I was immediately drawn to Creme Brulee (center, above) and tested it out on my hand.  The colour was very sheer, but the shimmer was beautiful and I could see it acting as a fantastic highlighting shadow.  I recently got a few more of these to test out and play with.  Read on to see what I think and to see some swatches!

First up – the texture.  While these claim to have a whipped texture, I found that they fell more into a soft, airy category a la Maybelline Bouncy Blush.  They are really light and almost “foamy” – my fingers made an indentation into them when I tried them out.  They applied very smoothly, although as you will see I did have to apply a couple of layers for consistent colour.  In terms of colour, most of the lighter shades weren’t as pigmented as I was hoping. It did take a couple of layers to get the colour that I wanted, but the end result was really nice.  These are perfect for a lighter eye and are great for daytime wear!  I will say that the one darker shade that I tried, Midnight Sky, came through much more pigmented and the colour was beautiful.  One layer and I was set!  One thing to note if you want to give these a try – I have been applying these with my fingers rather that with a brush.  I find these are much easier to apply this way and it is also better for colour build up.
