DIY Hot Oil Hair Treatment

DIY Hot Oil Hair Treatment

Hi beauties!  As we start moving into the colder, dryer weather that November brings with it I definitely start to notice a change in my hair and skin.  Everything starts to feel dryer, my hair seems to lose some of its “life” and just feels more dull.  To combat this, I’ve decided to try doing something that my mom has been doing for years – a DIY Hot Oil Hair Treatment.  I’ve always been a little skeptical about doing this – my hair isn’t super thick and I tend to get a little oily at the roots after 2 days – basically the exact opposite of my mom.  Her hair is very thick and I swear, her roots never get oily, so it just seemed like this was something that would work better for her.  Anyways, I figured I didn’t have anything to lose and decided to give this a try and was happy to see that yes, it did work for me!  Read on to learn how to do this treatment at home and let me know in the comments below what other kinds of at home hair treatments you’ve tried.

What do you need?  Coconut oil!  You may remember the DIY Lip Scrub Recipe I shared a little while back which used this as well.  As I’m sure you can guess, this stuff is such a great beauty secret weapon.  When it comes to your hair, it really does it all – protects, moisturizes, strengthens and adds shine.  You’re also going to want to grab saran wrap or a plastic shower cap, a blow dryer and a towel.

What do you need to do?

1.  Soften the coconut oil. It does tend to get pretty solid so you’re going to want to soften it to the point where you can easily apply it to your hair.  You can either do this by throwing some in the microwave or by placing a bowl in a pot of hot water on the stove until it reaches a nice soft consistency.

2. Apply the softened coconut oil and massage into your hair.  You can do this from the roots to the ends, but I try to avoid my roots so I don’t have to worry about oil building up there.

3.  Pile your hair up on top of your head and cover with saran wrap or the plastic shower cap, then blast with the blow dryer for a few minutes to heat up your hair so that the oil can begin to penetrate the hair shaft and get to work.

4.  Wrap a warm towel around your hair (leave the saran wrap/shower cap on) to help keep the heat in.  Leave this on for an hour or two to maximize the results – can anyone say at home spa day?

5.  Shower time!  Make sure you shampoo your hair well so that you don’t leave any oily residue behind.  Rinse and dry and be happy with how soft and strong your hair feels!
